Freescale spins out its MRAM chip business
add to del.icio.us
I wish my memory could get this kind of upgrade. Today, a new kind of chip memory is going to get a boost with the launch of a new venture spin-out company. If it succeeds, we’ll be carrying around much more responsive, instantly available portable gadgets in the future.
MRAM has been in the research labs for a long time as a chip technology that has the combined advantages of both temporary and permanent memory. But it has always been poised on the cusp, not quite ready yet to tip the scales in multibillion-dollar industries.
But Freescale Semiconductor is making a big move today by spinning out a venture-funded MRAM chip company, EverSpin Technologies. The spin-out is backed by New Venture Partners, Sigma Partners, Lux Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Epic Ventures. The first round investment is $20 million.
MRAM stands for magnetoresistive Random Access Memory. MRAM uses tiny magnets combined with conventional silicon circuits to create a combo memory. It is a single chip with the speed of static RAM and the permanence, or non-volatility, of flash memory. Typically, flash is slow and permanent, while SRAM is fast but temporary.
With MRAM powering a portable device, you could have zero boot time, or “instant on.” And you wouldn’t lose any data if the device suddenly lost power. Freescale will transfer its MRAM technology to the start-up and keep an equity position in the new venture.
The new venture means a couple of things. It will require an investment that is bigger than what Freescale alone could pour into the start-up. But it also means that the technology is closer to commercialization after years of research. Lisa Su, chief technology officer at Freescale, said the move will accelerate the adoption of MRAM across a bunch of uses. Freescale already has a slate of MRAM products in the market and EverSpin will supply products to Freescale’s MRAM customers.
MRAM hasn’t yet taken over the world because the products still have smaller storage capacities (four megabits) for the moment. As the manufacturing improves and memory capactities rise, MRAM will be able to wrest more applications away from traditional memory.
Travel Muse Brings “Discovery” To Travel Search
add to del.icio.us
The Travel category online is an example of how the Internet has made our lives both easier and more complicated. It very clearly exemplifies “the paradox of choice." Indeed, there are hundreds of travel sites that provide booking services and travel content of one sort or another. You're "empowered" with information but also potentially overwhelmed by it. Given this, it would seem we don't need any more travel sites. TravelMuse, which has just launched, makes the argument that there's still room for more "inspiration" in travel search.

John Gage joins top VC firm Kleiner Perkins
add to del.icio.us
Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the Silicon Valley venture capital firm that backed companies like Genentech, Netscape, Amazon.com and Google, said it has hired well-known Sun scientist John Gage as partner.
Gage, an early employee at Sun Microsystems, who more recently had become that company’s chief scientist, will provide “counsel to the firms’ global network of entrepreneurs, scientists, academics and government leaders,” the firm said in a statement.
Gage becomes the latest in a string of Sun alumni at the firm. John Doerr, the firm’s leading partner, years ago walked the halls at Stanford, found the Sun co-founders and invested in them, in what became the first success that was to earn Doerr a reputation for solid investments. Sun co-founders Vinod Khosla and Bill Joy later became partners at Kleiner Perkins, though Khosla has since moved on start his own firm, Khosla Ventures.
Joy claims Gage was the first person to show him a web browser.
Gage was responsible for Sun’s relationships with world scientific and technical organizations, for international public policy and governmental relations in the areas of scientific and technical policy, and for alliances with the world’s leading research institutions, Kleiner said in a statement.
Gage catalyzed the company’s popular Java One conference, and created NetDay, a volunteer project by high-tech companies to connect schools and libraries to the Internet.
Healthline Launches Semantic Health Ad Newtork
add to del.icio.us
Believing that health sites need their own ad network, Healthline is bringing its semantic search technology to advertising. The health search engine is launching the Health Media Network, an ad network that will place contextual ads on health Websites. It is like an AdSense for health sites.
But instead of relying simply on matching keywords on the page where the ad is being served, Healthline says it can serve ads that match the health concepts on the page. So an article that mentions the medical term “costochondritis” (an inflammation of the rib) might serve up an ad for ibuprofen (the most common treatment).
Healthline has created a taxonomy of 200,000 related health terms and concepts for its search engine, and is using the same underlying technology for it new ad network. It will be powering contextual health ads on its own search engine as well as partner sites such as United Health’s upcoming MyOptumHealth; AARP, Health.com, HealthPricer, JustAnswer, and USNews.com. All told these sites reach 10 million people a month, says the company.
Healthline itself has shown more zig-zag performance, most recently attracting 3.4 million visitors to its site worldwide in April, according to comScore. That was down from 5 million the month before.
